Description
Seen from a lateral aspect, the mandibible is rendered semi-translucent so the roots and alveolar housing remain readable while the dentition stays in normal sequence along the mandibular arch. The highlighted tooth corresponds to the mandibular second premolar (second mandibular bicuspid), positioned distal to the first premolar and mesial to the first molar, with its crown projecting superiorly from the alveolar process. From this angle, the buccal surface and occlusal table are emphasized, including the dominant buccal cusp with a subtle disto-occlusal inclination and the cervical contour at the cemento-enamel junction. That disto-occlusal cusp slant is not a trivial detail when you are teaching mandibular premolar identification, because the second premolar is a common source of confusion with the first premolar and, in some morphotypes, with a small first molar. Occlusal morphology also drives clinical decisions: the mandibular second premolar frequently has one root but can present with a broad canal system, and its cusp and marginal ridge anatomy influence restorative contouring, proximal contact placement, and the risk of working cusp fracture in large MOD preparations. Small landmark, big downstream consequences. Dental anatomy and operative dentistry courses use this lateral view to orient students to tooth position within the mandibular alveolus before moving to isolated crown morphology charts. It also fits well in patient education pieces for premolar crown placement, endodontic access orientation in the posterior mandible, and bitewing or periapical radiograph correlation where cusp height and occlusal plane relationships affect interpretation.
