Seen in lateral profile, the acromial region forms the superior bony contour of the shoulder as the deltoid muscle drapes from the lateral clavicle, acromion, and spine of the scapula to taper distally toward its insertion on the deltoid tuberosity of the humerus. The rounded deltoid cap sits superficial to the rotator cuff tendons, with the subacromial space deep to the acromion and coracoacromial arch, and the greater tubercle positioned anterolateral beneath the deltoid. Anteriorly, the deltopectoral interval would lie just forward of the deltoid’s anterior border, while posteriorly the muscle blends toward the scapular spine region. Clear surface anatomy. A lateral shoulder view matters when you need reliable landmarks for both examination and intervention because the acromion and deltoid contour guide palpation, range-of-motion assessment, and safe needle trajectory for intramuscular deltoid injection while keeping distance from the axillary nerve as it courses deep to the deltoid around the surgical neck of the humerus.
