Description
Seen from the lateral aspect, the posterior thoracic wall is defined by the rib cage curving from the vertebral column toward the sternum, with the scapula lying superficially and slightly posterolateral to the ribs. The scapular spine and acromion form a palpable ridge superiorly, while the inferior angle projects inferiorly toward the lower ribs, tracking with typical resting scapular position over the mid thorax. Along the midline, the spinous processes create a vertical landmark, and the intervening intercostal spaces contour the thoracic cage beneath. Bony relationships read clearly in this projection. A lateral view of the male back is the one many clinicians use when thinking through scapulothoracic motion and rib mechanics, because it clarifies how the scapula glides over the thoracic wall during shoulder elevation and protraction. That matters in common problems such as scapular dyskinesis, winging from long thoracic nerve palsy affecting serratus anterior, or spinal accessory nerve injury with trapezius weakness, where the medial border and inferior angle alter their position relative to the ribs.
