Description
Seen in lateral profile, the female deltoid muscle forms the rounded contour over the glenohumeral region, spanning from the lateral third of the clavicle and acromion to its distal insertion on the deltoid tuberosity of the humerus. Anteriorly, the deltopectoral groove separates the anterior deltoid from pectoralis major, while posteriorly the posterior deltoid sweeps toward the scapular spine and blends with the superficial fibers overlying teres major. Superior to the muscle belly, the acromion caps the shoulder, and inferiorly the deltoid tapers into the lateral arm, where the biceps brachii and triceps brachii contours begin to define the anterior and posterior compartments. Lateral shoulder anatomy matters because surface landmarks guide common injections and help avoid neurovascular injury. The deltoid region is the standard site for intramuscular vaccination, and the axillary nerve courses deep to the deltoid as it wraps around the surgical neck of the humerus, making overly distal injection placement a known risk for neuropraxia and persistent shoulder pain. This profile also supports teaching of deltoid fiber orientation, with anterior fibers flexing and medially rotating the arm, middle fibers abducting, and posterior fibers extending and laterally rotating.
