Seen in lateral profile, the woman’s hindfoot centers on the calcaneus (calcaneum), with the calcaneal tuberosity forming the most posterior and inferior contour of the heel. Superior to the tuberosity, the posterior calcaneus rises toward the Achilles tendon insertion, while anteriorly the calcaneus articulates with the cuboid and sits inferior to the talus at the subtalar joint. Along the lateral calcaneal wall, the peroneal trochlea may be appreciable as a small prominence separating the peroneus brevis tendon superiorly from the peroneus longus tendon inferiorly. Soft-tissue fullness over the tuberosity reflects the heel pad, thickest under the plantar aspect. A lateral heel view matters because many symptomatic and surgical landmarks live on this face of the calcaneus: the Achilles insertion and retrocalcaneal bursa posteriorly, the plantar fascia origin at the medial calcaneal tubercle (not directly lateral but anchored to the same tuberosity), and the lateral calcaneal wall where fractures often blow out with subtalar depression. Small details count.
