Description
Lateral surface anatomy of an adult female lower limb is presented from hip to foot, emphasizing the posterior contour and overall soft tissue thickness. The greater trochanter sits lateral to the femoral shaft, while the buttock and posterior thigh bulk is formed superficially by gluteus maximus and the hamstring compartment, tapering distally toward the popliteal region behind the knee. Along the lateral thigh, the iliotibial tract tracks inferiorly toward Gerdy’s tubercle on the anterolateral tibia, and the fibular head marks a palpable prominence posterolateral to the knee; distal to this, the lateral malleolus lies inferior and posterior to the medial malleolus, framing the ankle with the Achilles tendon positioned posteriorly. Surface relationships matter here. Palpation and clinical examination rely on them, from localizing tenderness over the greater trochanter in greater trochanteric pain syndrome (often involving the gluteus medius and minimus tendons) to identifying the fibular neck where the common fibular (peroneal) nerve is vulnerable to compression or trauma. Gait and alignment assessment also benefit from a true lateral profile because excessive knee flexion contracture, recurvatum, or loss of ankle dorsiflexion can be appreciated against the normal posterior silhouette of calf and heel.
