Description
Seen in lateral profile, the female neck (collum) is defined by the sternocleidomastoid, running obliquely from the mastoid process and superior nuchal line region down to the manubrium and medial clavicle, separating the anterior cervical region from the posterior triangle. Anterior to its border lie the suprahyoid and infrahyoid strap muscles over the hyoid bone and laryngeal framework, with the thyroid cartilage and cricoid cartilage forming palpable midline landmarks superior to the trachea. Posterior and slightly superior, the contour transitions toward the trapezius and the cervical spinous process line, with the cervical vertebrae underlying the nuchal soft tissues. Surface anatomy matters here. Clinically, this side view is the one clinicians use when they orient to the carotid triangle and the underlying carotid sheath, where the common carotid artery bifurcates near the level of C4 and the internal jugular vein lies lateral to it beneath the sternocleidomastoid. Neck examination for cervical lymphadenopathy, jugular venous distension, or thyroid and laryngeal enlargement often begins by reading these contours and bony landmarks, then correlating them to deeper structures you cannot see. The same relationships guide procedural planning, from anterior cervical spine approaches that track between visceral and vascular compartments to incision placement and retraction during carotid endarterectomy, while also explaining why sternocleidomastoid spasm produces the characteristic head tilt and rotation of torticollis.
