Deep to the lateral muscular sweep sits the femur, its greater trochanter palpably lateral, while vastus lateralis occupies the anterior and lateral compartment and transitions distally toward the lateral patellar retinaculum. Posteriorly, the long head of biceps femoris frames the posterolateral thigh as it descends toward the fibular head, separated from the quadriceps mass by the lateral intermuscular septum.
