Description
From a lateral perspective, the inferior portion of the male oral region is presented with the oral fissure (rima oris) forming the anterior opening of the oral cavity and terminating posteriorly at the labial commissure (angulus oris). The lower lip (labium inferius oris) occupies the inferior margin of the fissure, while the upper lip forms the superior border and overlaps it slightly in neutral occlusion. Superficial landmarks around the modiolus region are implied at the corner of the mouth, where fibers from orbicularis oris interlace with the perioral mimetic musculature. A clear skin to vermilion transition is typically visible at the vermilion border. This lateral orientation matters because it is the most practical way to teach and document the labial commissure as a functional hinge point for speech and mastication, and as a convergence zone for the modiolus that surgeons use to plan perioral incisions. Angular cheilitis and herpes labialis often localize to the commissure and vermilion border, and a side view helps clarify the distribution of fissuring, crusting, or edema relative to the cutaneous lip and oral mucosa.
