Description

Running obliquely across the anterolateral neck, the omohyoid is rendered as a slender, two-bellied infrahyoid strap muscle extending from the superior border of the scapula toward the body of the hyoid. From a lateral perspective beneath the skin, the inferior belly courses superiorly and medially across the posterior triangle toward an intermediate tendon, then continues as the superior belly deep to the sternocleidomastoid before reaching the hyoid region. Nearby surface anatomy includes the sternocleidomastoid, platysma contours, and the shoulder girdle musculature such as the deltoid and partially exposed pectoralis major, with facial muscles including masseter and temporalis anchoring the craniofacial context. Small-caliber cervical vessels are highlighted in red against grayscale muscle, consistent with branches and tributaries encountered around the carotid and jugular corridors. Small but specific. Surgeons and anatomists use the omohyoid as a practical landmark because its intermediate tendon is tethered by a fascial sling to the clavicle and deep cervical fascia, creating a recognizable inflection point as it crosses the lower neck and relates to the internal jugular vein and carotid sheath region. That relationship matters during central venous catheter placement and cervical lymph node dissection (levels III and IV), where the omohyoid helps frame the operative field and guides safe dissection planes around the jugular chain. The muscle’s innervation via the ansa cervicalis is also a common teaching hook when tracing the cervical plexus to the infrahyoid compartment. Ideal applications include head and neck anatomy labs, otolaryngology and general surgery training materials on neck triangles, and textbook figures explaining strap muscle layering in relation to sternocleidomastoid and the hyoid.
