Malignant Tumor Classified as Breast Cancer Stage 1

Description

Cut through the anterior chest wall, the breast is rendered in cross-section with abundant superficial adipose tissue surrounding lobules of the mammary gland (terminal duct lobular units) and their converging lactiferous ducts as they course anteriorly toward the nipple-areolar complex. Fibrous connective tissue septa (Cooper ligaments) tether the glandular parenchyma to overlying skin while thicker stromal bands partition fat and lobules. Deep to the retromammary space, the posterior breast abuts the pectoral fascia and pectoralis major muscle, with accompanying arteries and veins traversing the parenchyma and stroma. A small, localized malignant mass is positioned within the glandular tissue, consistent with breast cancer stage I, where tumor size is limited and there is no clinical or pathologic evidence of regional nodal spread. This is the lesion radiologists target when correlating mammography spiculations or ultrasound hypoechoic masses with the histologic unit of origin, most often the terminal duct lobular unit, and it is the anatomy surgeons use when planning lumpectomy margins relative to ducts, lobules, and the posterior plane over pectoralis major.
