Description
Along the medial border of the male foot, the hallucial eminence forms a rounded plantar prominence just distal to the medial longitudinal arch and immediately proximal to the base of the hallux. The skin contour overlies the medial head of the flexor hallucis brevis and the sesamoid complex at the first metatarsophalangeal joint, with the shaft of the first metatarsal running proximally toward the midfoot. Anteriorly, the hallux projects forward, while posteriorly the medial plantar surface transitions into the arch and heel. Bony and soft-tissue landmarks at the first ray read clearly in this orientation. A medial view of the ball of the great toe matters because it is where load transfer concentrates during terminal stance and push-off, and where common deformities first announce themselves on the surface.
