Description

Rotating to a medial view along the lateral leg, the animation isolates the fibular shaft and brings the interosseous crest (crista interossea fibulae) into profile as a narrow longitudinal ridge on the medial surface, positioned close to the anterior border. Proximally it approaches the fibular head, distally it fades toward the lateral malleolus, while the shaft’s medial surface and surrounding borders provide orientation in anatomical position. As the camera tracks along the diaphysis, the crest remains the constant landmark, separating adjacent surface areas that are otherwise easy to confuse in a static frame. Interosseous crest anatomy matters because it defines the fibular attachment for the interosseous membrane of the leg, the syndesmotic sheet that couples the tibia and fibula and transmits load during gait. The sequential sweep from proximal to distal clarifies where the membrane fibers anchor relative to the anterior border and helps explain why high ankle sprains with distal tibiofibular syndesmosis injury can alter fibular position and ankle mortise mechanics even when the fibular shaft itself is intact. This is a ridge you palpate conceptually, not physically. Use it in lower limb gross anatomy labs to teach bony landmarks before students move on to the crural interosseous membrane, anterior and lateral compartment boundaries, and distal syndesmotic relationships. It also fits orthopaedic and sports medicine teaching modules on ankle syndesmosis injury, as well as medical publishing workflows that need a clean, single-landmark sequence for labeling and assessment items. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
