Trochanteric fossa occupies the medial aspect of the greater trochanter, immediately lateral to the femoral neck and inferior to the posterosuperior margin of the trochanter. In this medial perspective, the depression reads as a deep, pocket-like recess within the cancellous framework of the proximal femur, with its margins blending posteriorly toward the intertrochanteric crest and inferiorly toward the region of the lesser trochanter. Relative to the femoral head, the fossa sits lateral and slightly posterior, tucked behind the axis of the neck. Bone surface detail is the point. Obturator externus inserts into the trochanteric fossa, and that relationship matters whenever you are teaching external rotator anatomy or planning posterior and posterolateral hip approaches where short external rotators are encountered and repaired.
