Description
Situated on the posteroinferior aspect of the auricle (pinna), the antitragicus muscle is shown deep to the male integument as a compact slip spanning between the antitragus and the cauda helicis. Superficial auricular landmarks remain readable, including the tragus anteriorly, the conchal bowl medially, and the lobule inferiorly, while the auricular cartilage forms the scaffold beneath the thin skin. Neighboring intrinsic auricular muscles along the concha and helix are included for orientation, with their fibers tracking along the cartilaginous contours rather than toward bony attachments. Small structure. Tight space. Recognition of the antitragicus matters when teaching why intrinsic auricular muscles produce only minor ear movements in most adults, yet can complicate surface anatomy and surgical planes around the concha. In otoplasty, reconstruction after traumatic avulsion, or local flap work for conchal defects, you often elevate skin directly off perichondrium, and thin muscle slips like the antitragicus can be encountered, divided, or incorporated into closure without being mistaken for scar tissue. The regional relationship to the conchal cartilage also helps when correlating tenderness or hematoma formation after blunt auricular trauma, where dissection planes and perichondrial attachments determine how a collection spreads.
