Seen from a posterior position, the male neurocranium is presented as the braincase formed by the parietal bones superiorly and laterally and the occipital bone inferiorly, meeting across the lambdoid (lambda) suture. At the midline, the sagittal suture descends toward the lambda, where it converges with the lambdoid suture to create a clear sutural landmark at the junction of the parietal and occipital bones. Inferior to this region, the occipital squama broadens toward the external occipital protuberance and superior nuchal lines, which frame the transition to the posterior neck. Orientation around lambda matters because sutures are more than surface seams, they guide neuroimaging localization and help estimate fracture trajectories after occipital impacts. A diastatic lambdoid suture can mimic a linear skull fracture on CT, while accessory sutural (Wormian) bones along the lambdoid suture may complicate interpretation unless the expected geometry at lambda is understood. For posterior cranial approaches, including midline suboccipital craniotomy, recognizing the relationship between parietal margin and occipital squama aids planning of bone windows and avoidance of venous sinus territory near the internal occipital region.
