Description
Positioned in a posterior orientation, the male femur is shown from the distal third through the condylar region, with the fracture line centered near the lateral femoral condyle at the articular surface. The medial and lateral condyles frame the intercondylar fossa posteriorly, while the femoral shaft runs proximally and slightly medial relative to the lateral condylar flare. Inferior to the femoral condyles, the tibial plateau is visible at the knee joint, and the patella is represented in relation to the distal femur despite the posterior viewpoint, helping anchor the trochlear region and extensor mechanism in space. Red highlighting marks the cortical disruption and adjacent bony trauma. Distal femoral fractures near the condyles are a different problem than midshaft injuries: they are often intra-articular, destabilize the knee, and can leave a step-off in the weightbearing cartilage if reduction is imperfect. Posterior relationships matter here because the popliteal artery and vein lie directly posterior to the distal femur, and displaced supracondylar or condylar fragments can threaten the neurovascular bundle even when the skin injury looks modest. Alignment is unforgiving. Varus collapse from lateral column comminution is a classic failure mode.
