Description
Posterior thigh anatomy is centered on the adductor magnus, shown spanning from the ischiopubic ramus and ischial tuberosity down to the femur’s linea aspera and medial supracondylar line, with its distal hamstring portion inserting near the adductor tubercle. Laterally, the biceps femoris forms the outer hamstring contour, while semitendinosus and semimembranosus lie more medially and superficial to the adductor magnus along the posterior-medial thigh. Superiorly the pelvis frames the proximal attachments, and inferiorly the femoral shaft continues to the knee region, with tibia and fibula aligned beneath. Seeing adductor magnus from behind matters because its dual innervation and dual function become easier to teach when you can separate the adductor part (obturator nerve) from the hamstring part (tibial division of the sciatic nerve), which behaves more like a hip extensor during gait and lifting. The distal tendinous arch of adductor magnus forms the adductor hiatus, the transition point where the femoral artery and vein leave the anterior compartment to enter the popliteal fossa, a relationship that explains why adductor canal and distal thigh procedures demand careful attention to medial femoral landmarks.
