Seen from a posterior perspective, the paired cerebral hemispheres are separated by the longitudinal fissure and capped inferiorly by the cerebellum, with the occipital poles lying most posterior. Blue highlighting localizes to the lobulus parietalis inferior on each side, spanning the supramarginal gyrus as it curves around the posterior end of the sulcus lateralis and continuing into the angular gyrus arching around the posterior termination of the sulcus temporalis superior. Superior to this territory, the superior parietal lobule and adjacent intraparietal region would sit more dorsally, while the lateral occipital cortex lies posterior and slightly inferior at the parieto-occipital junction. Sulci and gyri remain visible as relief, letting you orient the inferior parietal lobule relative to the posterior parietal convexity. This posterior-lateral emphasis matters because inferior parietal cortex anchors several bedside and operative localizations: lesions involving the dominant angular gyrus classically produce components of Gerstmann syndrome (acalculia, agraphia, finger agnosia, left-right disorientation), while dominant supramarginal involvement can disrupt phonological processing and contribute to conduction aphasia. On the nondominant side, injury to the inferior parietal lobule contributes to hemispatial neglect and constructional apraxia, a pattern frequently discussed in posterior circulation stroke and traumatic contusion of the parietal convexity. For neurosurgical planning, this region sits near cortico-cortical language and attention networks, so it often appears in discussions of awake mapping for parietal gliomas and in teaching the parietal components of the dorsal visual stream.
