Description
Viewed from the posterior aspect of the male pelvis and lower limb, the profunda femoris (deep femoral) artery arises from the femoral artery in the proximal thigh, then courses posterolaterally toward the femur where it gives off perforating branches that pass through adductor magnus to reach the posterior compartment. Medial and lateral circumflex femoral arteries are suggested near the femoral neck, wrapping around the proximal femur and contributing to the periarticular arterial ring. Beneath the pelvic bones (ilium superiorly), the femur descends to the knee, with the tibia and fibula continuing distally to the tarsals, providing fixed landmarks against which the red arterial and blue venous channels run in parallel. Posterior orientation matters for teaching how the deep femoral system supplies the hamstrings and forms key anastomoses around the hip and knee, territory that is not intuitive from an anterior femoral triangle view. Perforating branches become clinically relevant in penetrating thigh trauma and in operative approaches that split the posterior compartment, where unexpected bleeding often comes from profunda femoris branches rather than the superficial femoral artery. The circumflex branches also frame discussions of femoral head perfusion, including the vulnerability of retinacular vessels in femoral neck fractures. Use this plate for gross anatomy labs covering the thigh compartments, for vascular surgery or orthopedic texts illustrating profunda femoris anatomy in relation to the femur, and for trauma education emphasizing posterior thigh hemorrhage control. It also supports radiology teaching when correlating surgical anatomy with CT angiography or catheter angiography of the femoral and profunda femoris systems. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
