Description

Rotating into a posterior perspective, the proximal radius comes into focus at the elbow, centered on the caput radii (radial head) as a shallow, disc-like expansion at the superior end of the bone. The smooth fovea on its superior surface aligns with the capitulum of the humerus, while the circumferential articular rim tracks against the radial notch of the ulna within the annular ligament. As the sequence progresses, the neck of the radius is seen immediately distal to the head, transitioning into the proximal shaft along the lateral side of the forearm in anatomical position. Clinically, this region is where radial head fractures concentrate after a fall on an outstretched hand, and the posterior orientation helps clarify why even small articular step-offs can limit pronation-supination when the radial head must spin and glide within the proximal radioulnar joint. Motion matters here. By animating the relationship between the radial head’s articular circumference and the ulna, the clip makes it easier to explain mechanical blocks to rotation, post-traumatic stiffness, and why fracture patterns are assessed in relation to the radiocapitellar joint surface and the radial neck. Use this animation in upper limb osteology and gross anatomy courses, in orthopaedic teaching on Mason classification and radial head arthroplasty planning, or as a figure panel for texts covering elbow biomechanics and proximal radioulnar joint kinematics. It also fits patient-facing explanations of elbow injury when paired with plain radiographs or CT reconstructions. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
