Description
Seen from behind, the female cranial vault is dominated by the squamous part of the occipital bone forming the inferior midline contour, with the paired parietal bones positioned superiorly and laterally. The lambdoid suture arcs between parietals and occipital bone, while the external occipital protuberance sits on the median line inferior to the parietal region, continuous laterally with the superior nuchal lines. At the posterolateral margins, the occipitomastoid region and the mastoid portions of the temporal bones frame the transition toward the cranial base, creating recognizable landmarks around the asterion. Posterior skull anatomy matters because surgeons and radiologists use these surface contours to infer what lies deep: the internal occipital protuberance and grooves for the transverse sinuses, with the transverse-sigmoid junction projecting near the asterion and informing burr-hole placement in posterior fossa and retrosigmoid approaches. Small accessory sutural (Wormian) bones may appear along the lambdoid suture and can be mistaken for fracture fragments on trauma imaging, while true occipital fractures often track toward the foramen magnum or along the occipitomastoid suture. Clear depiction of the external occipital protuberance and nuchal lines also supports teaching of muscular attachments, including trapezius and sternocleidomastoid, and the midline nuchal ligament.
