Description
Centered on the posterior cervical region, the transversus colli nerve is traced from its proximal origin at the cervical spinal nerves as they exit the intervertebral foramina between adjacent cervical vertebrae. From the dorsal aspect it can be followed as it arcs laterally across the side of the neck before turning ventrally, with the occipital bone and posterior skull superiorly and the scapulae and proximal humeri inferiorly and laterally. Yellow peripheral nerve trunks radiate toward the shoulder girdle, and light blue vessels run in close apposition along parts of the nerve course. Bony landmarks remain clean and legible. Orientation from behind matters because it clarifies where the cervical nerves emerge relative to the posterior elements of the cervical spine and the deep compartment fascia before cutaneous branches swing anteriorly. This is the anatomy you want in mind when correlating neck pain, sensory disturbance, or dysesthesia along the anterior neck after traction injury, cervical spine surgery, or regional anesthesia, where the proximal segments can be irritated near the foramina even when symptoms present more ventrally. It also reinforces how easily nerves and accompanying vessels can be confused in dissection or in schematic teaching, given their parallel trajectories.
