Description
Shown in section through the gravid uterus at 18 weeks’ gestation, the conceptus lies suspended in the amniotic cavity, curled in a typical flexed fetal posture with the head oriented superiorly and the limbs drawn anteriorly toward the trunk. The placenta is apposed to the uterine wall and connects to the fetal umbilicus via a coiled umbilical cord that courses freely through the amniotic fluid. Surrounding the gestational sac, the uterine wall is rendered in layers, with the endometrium and decidua lining the cavity deep to the myometrium. Eighteen weeks sits in the mid-second trimester, a time when placental location and the cord insertion become clinically relevant for both screening and counseling. This sectional anatomy aligns well with obstetric ultrasound teaching, where the fetus, placenta, and amniotic fluid are assessed together, and it supports discussion of placenta previa, low-lying placenta, or abnormal placentation patterns that may later complicate delivery. Fetal flexion and the visible extremities also ground conversations about growth assessment, dating, and the transition from embryologic terminology to fetal anatomy. A teaching sweet spot.
