Description
Seen from a lateral perspective, the anterior ankle and dorsum of the foot are framed by the distal fibula at the lateral malleolus and the talus seated beneath the tibial plafond, with the subtalar region and calcaneus lying posterior and inferior. Across the anterolateral tarsus, the extensor tendons course distally toward the toes, with extensor digitorum longus and extensor hallucis longus sitting more anterior than the peroneal tendons that pass posterior to the lateral malleolus. Superficial landmarks that typically read well in this region include the sinus tarsi depression anteroinferior to the lateral malleolus and the contour of the talar neck. Blue kinesiology tape spans the ankle in the anterolateral quadrant. Clinically, this is the corridor where inversion sprains most often injure the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL), a short band running from the anterior margin of the lateral malleolus to the talar neck, and where swelling can obscure the sinus tarsi and peroneal tendon sheath. Taping patterns applied over the anterolateral ankle commonly aim to limit excessive inversion and anterior talar translation while still permitting plantarflexion and dorsiflexion, a practical teaching point when discussing return to sport after grade I to II sprain. Palpation and surface marking here also anchor ultrasound evaluation of the ATFL and the peroneus brevis tendon, two frequent pain generators in lateral ankle instability.
