Description
Centered on the anterior buccal and perioral face, the highlighted field spans the cheek overlying the body of the mandible and continues inferiorly toward the mental region at the chin. Superolaterally, the buccal soft tissues relate to the zygomatic (malar) prominence, while medially they border the oral commissure and upper lip. Deep to the surface lie the buccinator forming the lateral wall of the oral vestibule, the masseter along the lateral mandibular ramus, and the parotid duct coursing anteriorly to pierce the buccinator opposite the maxillary second molar. Cutaneous landmarks align with key neurovascular structures, including the facial artery and vein crossing the mandibular body anterior to the masseter, and the mental foramen transmitting the mental nerve and vessels below the second premolar region. Facial anatomy in this corridor matters because small positional errors can injure structures that sit only millimeters apart, and the safest planes differ between the cheek fat pads, the buccal space, and the perimandibular tissues; even a simple laceration repair can compromise the parotid duct or the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve. In odontogenic infections, the relationship between the mandibular teeth, buccinator attachment, and the buccal space helps predict whether swelling localizes intraorally or tracks into the cheek. Needle placement for a mental nerve block also depends on recognizing the chin contour and the expected location of the mental foramen. Details matter.
