Description
Posterior surface anatomy of the lower limb is presented from the gluteal fold to the calcaneus, with emphasis on the leg (crus) between knee and ankle. Superficial contours correspond to the gastrocnemius heads proximally, the soleus belly deep and inferior, and the tapering Achilles (calcaneal) tendon descending centrally to its insertion on the posterior calcaneus. Medially the tibia defines a straighter border with minimal muscular coverage, while the fibula lies lateral and slightly posterior, contributing to the lateral malleolar region distally. The highlighted zone from just inferior to the popliteal region to the ankle brackets the primary posterior compartment musculature and the neurovascular corridor running deep to it. Calf anatomy in this projection matters because many high-yield problems are diagnosed by posterior inspection and palpation. Sudden loss of the normal Achilles contour and a proximal retracted muscle belly supports suspicion for Achilles tendon rupture, and this view also frames the usual site of gastrocnemius-soleus strain in running and jumping athletes.
