Description

Viewed from posterior, the animation centers on the posterior inferior iliac spine (spina iliaca posterior inferior) along the posterior border of the ilium, positioned inferior to the posterior superior iliac spine and superior to the greater sciatic notch. As the camera tracks along the iliac crest down toward the ischium, the PIIS is shown as a short, blunt projection that helps bracket the superior margin of the greater sciatic notch laterally. Subtle rotation clarifies how the notch sits inferior and anterior to the posterior border while the adjacent sacroiliac region lies medial. Locating the PIIS matters when teaching pelvic surface anatomy and when orienting posterior pelvic imaging, because it anchors the transition from the iliac posterior border into the greater sciatic notch where key neurovascular structures exit the pelvis. The animated sequence makes the relationship between the PIIS and the notch easier to appreciate than a single frame, reducing common confusion between the greater and lesser sciatic notches and the nearby ischial spine, a landmark for pudendal nerve entrapment and pudendal nerve block technique. Small landmark. Big consequences for navigation. Use this clip for gross anatomy lab orientation, orthopedic and sports medicine lectures on posterior pelvic pain patterns near the sacroiliac region, and figure labeling in atlases or journal articles discussing the sciatic notch corridor and posterior pelvic landmarks. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
