Description
Arising from the anterior ciliary arterial system, an episcleral artery courses superficially along the outer surface of the sclera, just deep to Tenon’s capsule and adjacent to the bulbar conjunctiva at the limbus. The globe sits centrally within a partial skull section, with the optic nerve exiting posteriorly through the orbital apex. Surrounding orbital walls and nearby air spaces consistent with the paranasal sinuses frame the eye, while accompanying episcleral venous channels lie close to the arterial segment on the anterior scleral surface. Small vessels dominate the field. Episcleral arterial and venous plexuses matter because they sit at the interface between the conjunctiva, sclera, and anterior segment outflow pathways, and their caliber and injection patterns are used clinically to distinguish superficial conjunctival hyperemia from deeper episcleritis or scleritis. For anterior segment surgeons, this vascular layer also sets the bleeding profile and tissue handling planes for limbal-based conjunctival peritomy in trabeculectomy or scleral buckle exposure, and it helps explain why diffuse episcleral venous congestion can correlate with elevated intraocular pressure in secondary glaucoma. Spatially, the artery’s perilimbal course is the landmark.
