Description
Anterior surface anatomy of the upper abdomen is centered on the epigastric region, bounded superiorly by the xiphoid process and costal margins and blending inferiorly toward the umbilical region along the linea alba. The rectus abdominis bellies sit paramedian on either side of the midline, with the linea semilunaris curving laterally toward the costal cartilages. A highlighted rectangular overlay marks the epigastrium in a neutral standing Black female figure, a useful cue for correlating surface landmarks to deeper viscera such as the stomach, left lobe of the liver, proximal duodenum, pancreas, and the abdominal aorta just posterior to the anterior abdominal wall. Clinically, the epigastric region is where symptom location often narrows differential diagnosis: burning epigastric pain after meals raises concern for gastritis or peptic ulcer disease, while severe epigastric pain radiating to the back fits acute pancreatitis. Palpation here also matters when screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm in thin patients, and it is the common corridor for upper midline incisions and supraumbilical laparoscopic port placement, where attention to the linea alba and the course of the superior epigastric vessels reduces bleeding and postoperative hernia risk. Surface anatomy guides judgment. It saves time.
