Description

Rendered over a semi-transparent head and upper neck, the superficial venous network tracks from the scalp to the cervical outflow in a lateral to slightly oblique profile. Superiorly, the frontal and parietal scalp veins converge toward the superficial temporal vein, while posterior scalp drainage courses to the occipital and posterior auricular veins. Along the face, the supraorbital and supratrochlear veins descend at the superomedial orbit to form the angular vein, which continues inferiorly as the facial vein crossing the mandible anterior to the masseter, with the retromandibular vein lying more posterior within the parotid region and feeding the external jugular vein that runs superficial to the sternocleidomastoid toward the subclavian vein. Surface venous anatomy of the head matters because these channels are both common sites of bleeding and clinically meaningful conduits for infection. The angular and facial veins communicate with the superior and inferior ophthalmic veins, providing a route by which infections in the so-called danger triangle of the face can extend toward the cavernous sinus and present as cavernous sinus thrombosis with cranial neuropathies. Scalp veins also explain why even small lacerations can bleed briskly, since vessels are tethered within dense connective tissue and tend not to retract.
