Description

Beginning from a superior viewpoint over the cervical spine, the animation centers on the uncinate processes (uncus corporis) rising from the superolateral margins of the cervical vertebral bodies, most characteristically C3 through C7. As the sequence progresses, the viewer tracks how each uncus forms the medial wall of the uncovertebral joint (joints of Luschka) with the inferolateral edge of the vertebral body above, immediately lateral to the intervertebral disc and anterior to the vertebral canal. Subtle rotation and parallax help separate the uncinate ridge from the adjacent pedicle and transverse process, clarifying its position at the junction between the vertebral body and the foramen transversarium. Orientation is unmistakable. Uncinate hypertrophy and uncovertebral osteophytes are common drivers of cervical radiculopathy, narrowing the neural foramen where the cervical spinal nerve exits, and they also contribute to lateral recess stenosis by encroaching on the anterolateral aspect of the spinal canal. A superior animated sweep makes it easier to appreciate why foraminal compromise can be asymmetric, with bony overgrowth projecting posteriorly and laterally toward the exiting nerve root rather than centrally. That spatial relationship is difficult to teach with a single still, because the uncus reads as a thin lip until you watch it cast depth against the disc margin and vertebral endplate. Use this asset for cervical spine modules in gross anatomy, radiology correlation labs (CT bone windows and oblique foraminal reconstructions), and surgical education discussing anterior cervical discectomy and fusion planning or foraminal decompression where uncovertebral resection risks the vertebral artery laterally. It also fits textbook figures on cervical spondylosis and uncovertebral joint anatomy in the neck. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
