Description
Cribriform plate (lamina cribrosa) forms the midline roof of the nasal cavity and the central floor of the anterior cranial fossa in this superior perspective. Multiple olfactory foramina perforate the plate on either side of the crista galli, which rises superiorly as a sharp midline ridge for falx cerebri attachment. Laterally, the cribriform plate transitions toward the ethmoidal labyrinth, where the ethmoidal air cells sit inferior to the cranial base and border the plate near its outer margins. Fine bony detail dominates the field. Olfactory nerve filaments traverse these foramina from the superior nasal mucosa to the olfactory bulb, so disruption of the cribriform plate is a direct anatomical explanation for post-traumatic anosmia. Even small fractures in this region can open a conduit between nasal cavity and subarachnoid space, producing cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea and raising meningitis risk, a correlation often discussed alongside anterior skull base trauma and iatrogenic injury during endoscopic ethmoidectomy. Surface texture and the distribution of foramina support orientation when teaching how the crista galli separates the olfactory fossae and how the ethmoid’s pneumatized labyrinth abuts the skull base.
