Seen from a superior aspect, the male bony pelvis is defined by the right and left hip bones (ossa coxae) forming the pelvic ring around the pelvic inlet, with the iliac alae flaring laterally and the sacral promontory projecting anteriorly at the midline. Anteriorly, the pubic bodies converge to the pubic symphysis, while the arcuate line of the ilium continues into the pecten pubis to outline the linea terminalis. Posterolaterally, the acetabula sit lateral to the pelvic brim, and the greater sciatic notches fall posterior to the acetabulum on each side. Orientation is clear. This top down view is the one you want when teaching pelvic brim anatomy and the obstetric conjugates, because you can trace the inlet boundary in one sweep from promontory to arcuate line to pubic crest. Male morphology matters here: the inlet tends to be narrower and more heart-shaped, the subpubic angle is more acute, and the ischial spines project more medially, all features that influence pelvic measurements and the expected corridor for transpelvic approaches. For trauma and orthopedics, this perspective also supports discussions of ring stability, where fractures across the pubic rami or through the sacrum convert a stable injury into an unstable one. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and osteology labs to anchor identification of ilium, pubis, ischium, sacrum, coccyx, and acetabulum, and in radiology teaching when introducing how CT axial slices relate to the pelvic inlet and acetabular orientation.
