Description
Centered on the hypochondriac region, the blue band brackets the upper lateral abdomen on both sides of the epigastric region, immediately inferior to the costal margins and superficial to the lower ribs and upper abdominal wall. On the subject’s right, this surface area overlies the right lobe of the liver and gallbladder, with the hepatic flexure of the colon and the superior pole of the right kidney positioned more posteriorly beneath the diaphragm. On the left, the band corresponds to the spleen deep to ribs 9 to 11, the gastric fundus and body anteromedially, and the splenic flexure with the tail of the pancreas lying posteriorly toward the left flank. Clinically, this regional framing mirrors how abdominal pain and mass findings are localized during history and physical exam. Right hypochondriac tenderness with inspiratory arrest (Murphy sign) points you toward acute cholecystitis, while a palpable inferior liver edge below the right costal margin raises hepatomegaly, hepatic congestion, or a space-occupying lesion before imaging is even ordered. Left-sided fullness suggests splenomegaly, and the rib-protected position also matters in trauma, where lower thoracic fractures can lacerate the spleen or liver and produce hemoperitoneum that tracks into the upper quadrants. Use this asset for teaching abdominal topography in gross anatomy, surface anatomy, and OSCE-focused physical diagnosis, or for clarifying documentation of right versus left upper quadrant (hypochondriac) symptoms in clinical education materials.
