Description

Anterior, full-torso transparency reveals the major thoracic and abdominopelvic viscera of a prepubertal female in anatomical position. Superiorly, the trachea descends in the midline to the primary bronchi and paired lungs, with the heart seated centrally between them and the diaphragm forming the inferior boundary of the thoracic cavity. Inferior to the diaphragm, the liver occupies the right upper quadrant, the stomach lies in the left upper quadrant with the spleen lateral to it, and coils of small intestine are framed peripherally by the large intestine, with the rectum continuing inferiorly into the pelvis. Paired kidneys sit retroperitoneally on either side of the vertebral column, and the urinary bladder is positioned midline and low in the pelvis, anterior to the uterus and ovaries, which are shown as appropriately small for age. Pediatric organ topography differs in ways that matter at the bedside: the liver is proportionally larger and extends more inferiorly, and the diaphragm sits relatively higher, which can change where you expect breath sounds, dullness to percussion, or abdominal tenderness. A frontal overview like this helps teach why right lower quadrant pain in a child still points you to the appendix, but why guarding can be diffuse and why ultrasound windows for pyloric stenosis, hepatomegaly, or hydronephrosis depend on accurate surface projections.
