Description
Framed in lateral profile, the temporal region is defined superiorly by the inferior temporal line of the parietal bone and inferiorly by the zygomatic arch, with the squamous part of the temporal bone forming much of the bony floor. Anteriorly, the boundary approaches the lateral orbital rim and frontozygomatic area, while posteriorly it blends toward the mastoid region and posterior root of the zygomatic process, just anterior to the external acoustic meatus. A translucent cranial window localizes a cerebral area beneath the temple, corresponding anatomically to the temporal lobe deep to the squamous temporal bone and temporalis muscle. Clear surface landmarks. Clinically, the temple is a high-stakes corridor because the pterion lies just superior and anterior to the external acoustic meatus, where a thin calvarium overlies the anterior branch of the middle meningeal artery and epidural hematoma can follow blunt trauma. The superficial temporal artery and vein traverse the region anterior to the ear, a common site for palpation and for temporal artery biopsy in suspected giant cell arteritis. For procedures such as temporomandibular joint arthrocentesis or cosmetic filler placement, appreciating the relationship of the zygomatic arch, temporalis fascia, and neurovascular bundles reduces the risk of vascular injury and unintended intramuscular injection. Educators can drop this lateral head-and-neck view into neuroanatomy and surface anatomy teaching to tie the temporal lobe to palpable cranial landmarks, and into emergency medicine or trauma modules when discussing temporal bone fractures and epidural bleeding patterns. Medical publishers will also find it well suited for patient-facing materials on temporal arteritis and headache localization where skin tone representation matters for visual recognition.
