Description
Anterior head and neck anatomy is organized here as layered systems, with the orbital contents and facial soft tissues set against the skull, mandible, clavicles, and upper ribs. Superficially, the facial muscles of expression (orbicularis oculi, zygomaticus major and minor, orbicularis oris) sit anterior to the maxilla and mandible, while the sternocleidomastoid descends inferolaterally toward the clavicle. Red arterial channels trace the external carotid distribution across the face (facial and superficial temporal arteries) and toward the orbit via branches of the ophthalmic artery, paired with blue venous drainage that converges into the internal jugular system; yellow cranial nerves and cervical plexus branches course between muscle planes, and green lymphatic pathways and nodes cluster along the submental, submandibular, and anterior cervical chains. Sensory emphasis falls on the eyes, with periocular vasculature and innervation framing the globe. Clinical teaching lands naturally on the anterior relationships among vessels, nerves, and muscles, because that is where facial pain syndromes, motor deficits, and procedural complications are easiest to localize. The trigeminal nerve territories (V1 supraorbital, V2 infraorbital, V3 mental) map onto common injection and block sites, and they anchor differential diagnosis in trigeminal neuralgia and postherpetic neuralgia. Venous connections between the facial vein and cavernous sinus via the superior ophthalmic vein matter in infections of the central face, while the external carotid and internal jugular corridor is the operative field for neck dissection and a frequent source of iatrogenic injury to the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve.
