Description

Arising from the cerebellar vermis and extending laterally toward the flocculus, the inferior medullary velum forms a thin, translucent sheet along the caudal roof of the fourth ventricle. The sequence tracks its continuity with the tela choroidea and choroid plexus, then clarifies how this membranous layer relates anteriorly to the dorsal surface of the medulla oblongata and posteriorly to the inferior cerebellar peduncles. As the camera advances, the rhomboid fossa comes into view beneath it, situating the velum relative to the obex inferiorly and the foramen of Magendie at the midline caudal aperture. Delicate anatomy. Understanding the inferior medullary velum matters when teaching fourth ventricle boundaries and CSF egress, because confusion often arises between the cerebellar components of the roof (velum) and the membranous tela choroidea that carries the choroid plexus. The animated progression makes the spatial hierarchy obvious: a thin neural lamina draped between cerebellar structures, then a membranous layer that participates in the median aperture, a distinction that underpins discussions of obstructive hydrocephalus and posterior fossa malformations such as Dandy-Walker spectrum. It also maps cleanly onto surgical orientation during midline posterior fossa approaches where the inferior vermis and tonsillar region are mobilized to reach the ventricle. Use this animation in neuroanatomy and neuroradiology teaching to anchor fourth ventricle roof anatomy before correlating with sagittal and axial MRI, or in operative anatomy modules preparing trainees for telovelar approaches and endoscopic fourth ventriculoscopy. It also reads well as a short insert for ventricular system chapters in medical textbooks and e-learning. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
