Description

Layered anatomy of the female head and anterior neck is rendered with facial musculature in red, superficial veins in blue, and cutaneous and motor nerves in yellow. Around the orbit, orbicularis oculi encircles the palpebral fissure while zygomaticus major and minor course inferolaterally toward the modiolus, lying superficial to the buccinator and adjacent to the parotid-masseteric region. Inferiorly, the sternocleidomastoid descends obliquely from mastoid process to sternum and clavicle, with the external jugular vein crossing its superficial surface and cervical nerve branches tracking anteromedially toward the infrahyoid and suprahyoid compartments. Topographic relationships matter here because so many symptoms map to small spatial errors. The facial nerve exits the stylomastoid foramen and divides within the parotid gland, so the proximity of its temporal, zygomatic, buccal, marginal mandibular, and cervical branches to the masseter, orbicularis oris, and platysma explains the pattern of weakness after parotidectomy or facial trauma. The external jugular vein’s course over sternocleidomastoid, contrasted with the deeper internal jugular vein within the carotid sheath, supports safe planning for central venous access, neck dissection levels, and interpretation of venous distension in raised central venous pressure.
