Description
Presented in lateral profile, the female mandible is isolated in blue against the remaining craniofacial skeleton, with the body extending anteriorly from the mandibular angle to the symphysis and mental protuberance, and the ramus rising superiorly toward the condylar and coronoid processes. Posteriorly, the mandibular condyle sits inferior to the temporal bone at the temporomandibular joint, while the coronoid process projects anterosuperiorly beneath the zygomatic arch, separated by the mandibular notch. Superior to the mandibular body, the maxilla and the upper and lower dental arches align in occlusion; inferior to the mandibular angle, the hyoid bone and the cervical vertebrae (upper cervical spine in profile) establish the bony framework of the anterior neck. Lateral mandibular anatomy is a daily reference for dentistry, maxillofacial surgery, and emergency care because fracture lines and displacements predictably track along the angle, body, and condylar neck, and the TMJ relationship to the temporal articular surface guides reduction and immobilization. Condylar fractures can shorten the ramus and disturb occlusion, while anterior body fractures often threaten the inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle within the mandibular canal and may present with lower lip numbness. This view also supports teaching TMJ mechanics, where the condyle translates anteriorly toward the articular eminence during mouth opening. Clear landmarks. Fast recognition.
