Anterior Depiction of the Female Axilla

Description

Anteriorly oriented, the female axilla is framed by the pectoralis major and pectoralis minor forming the anterior wall, with the clavipectoral fascia spanning between them and toward the clavicle superiorly. Medially, the serratus anterior covers the lateral thoracic wall and defines the medial wall against the ribs and intercostal spaces. The deep axillary space lies between these muscular boundaries, continuing superiorly toward the cervicoaxillary canal at the apex and opening inferiorly toward the axillary fascia and floor. Clinically, this anterior perspective matters because it matches the exposure used when approaching axillary lymph nodes and the neurovascular bundle through an anterior axillary incision, and it clarifies how the pectoral muscles can obscure deeper structures during breast and axillary surgery. It also supports teaching of lymphatic drainage pathways relevant to breast carcinoma, where level I and II nodes relate to the lateral border of pectoralis minor and the fascia planes that guide dissection.
