Description
Running from the inguinal region to the dorsum of the foot, the anterior female lower limb is presented with the thigh continuous with the leg across the knee. Proximally, the anterior thigh contours correspond to the quadriceps femoris group (rectus femoris centrally, vastus medialis and vastus lateralis flanking it), with the sartorius crossing obliquely from lateral hip toward the medial knee and the adductor longus forming the medial thigh border. Distally, the patella sits anterior to the femoral condyles, the tibial tuberosity lies inferior to the patellar ligament, and the tibialis anterior and long toe extensors course down the anterior compartment toward the ankle and forefoot. Clear landmarks. Clinically, this is the working surface for bedside and operative orientation: the femoral triangle region localizes the femoral pulse and the access site for arterial puncture, while the course of the great saphenous vein along the anteromedial leg frames common sites for varicosities and venous cutdown. The anterior knee relationships support teaching of patellofemoral tracking and the extensor mechanism, a frequent focus in anterior knee pain, patellar tendinopathy, and postoperative rehabilitation after ACL reconstruction. At the ankle and dorsum, the interval between tibialis anterior and extensor hallucis longus approximates the dorsalis pedis pulse, a standard vascular exam point in peripheral arterial disease.
