Description
Centered between the right and left costal margins, the epigastric region is highlighted on the anterior abdominal wall of an adult Black male. Superiorly it approaches the xiphoid process and adjacent sternocostal junctions, while laterally it is bounded by the subcostal angle and the inferior borders of the ribs and costal cartilages. Beneath the skin surface, the paired rectus abdominis muscles flank the linea alba in the midline, with the aponeuroses of the external oblique, internal oblique, and transversus abdominis forming the rectus sheath across this upper central abdomen.
