Description
From an anterior perspective of the male cerebrum, the superior temporal gyrus (gyrus temporalis superior) occupies the superior aspect of the temporal lobe, immediately inferior to the lateral (Sylvian) sulcus and lateral to the insular cortex buried in its depths. Posteriorly it approaches the supramarginal gyrus at the inferior parietal lobule, while inferiorly it is separated from the middle temporal gyrus by the superior temporal sulcus. On the medial and inferior surface, the temporal lobe curves toward the parahippocampal gyrus and uncus, structures that sit inferomedial to the superior temporal convolution even when the lateral surface is the main emphasis. Orientation matters. Clinically, this gyrus is a standard landmark for auditory and language networks: Heschl’s transverse temporal gyri (primary auditory cortex) sit on its superior surface within the lateral sulcus, and the posterior superior temporal gyrus contributes to Wernicke-area function on the dominant hemisphere. That relationship drives day-to-day neuroanatomy teaching and real operative decisions, since resections for superior temporal glioma or epilepsy surgery are planned to avoid postoperative receptive aphasia and auditory processing deficits. The same neighborhood is interrogated in stroke, with inferior division MCA infarcts often involving posterior superior temporal cortex.
