Centered in the anterior thorax, the heart sits between the right and left lungs, with the right atrium and right ventricle positioned more anteriorly while the left ventricle forms the leftward cardiac border and apex. Arising superiorly, the pulmonary trunk bifurcates into right and left pulmonary arteries that course laterally toward each hilum, while paired pulmonary veins return medially to the left atrium. The ascending aorta and aortic arch pass superior and posterior to the pulmonary outflow, and the superior vena cava descends on the patient’s right side into the right atrium. Inferiorly, the diaphragm separates the pericardium from upper abdominal viscera, allowing the liver to appear beneath the right hemidiaphragm in this cutaway-style anterior perspective. Color coding distinguishes oxygenated and deoxygenated flow.
