Description
Oriented from an anterior perspective of the male upper thorax, the superior thoracic vein is shown coursing in the superior pectoral region just inferior to the clavicle, running superficial to the upper intercostal spaces and along the deep surface of pectoralis major near its clavicular head. Tributary venules from the first and second intercostal spaces converge medially as the vessel tracks toward the axillary region, where it typically joins the axillary vein or a proximal segment of the cephalic venous system. Pectoralis major forms the dominant anterior muscular plane, with slips of intercostal muscles visible between ribs; lateral borders of deltoid and proximal biceps brachii frame the shoulder and arm. The sternum lies medially, and the thoracic vertebral column is centered posteriorly as a midline reference through the torso. This view matters when you need to teach or plan venous access and dissection in the infraclavicular and axillary corridors, where small-caliber tributaries can become a nuisance source of bleeding during subpectoral pocket creation for pacemakers or ICDs and during axillary lymph node surgery. Relationships to the clavicle, pectoralis major, and the cephalic-axillary confluence help explain why superficial veins in the upper pectoral region can be encountered or injured during deltopectoral approaches.
