Anteriorly, the rectus abdominis is centered on the linea alba and runs superior to inferior from the costal cartilages toward the pubic crest, its tendinous intersections dividing the muscle belly into stacked segments. Lateral to it, the abdominal wall layers are suggested in grayscale, with the transversus abdominis positioned deepest, its transverse fibers coursing horizontally and wrapping medially to the rectus sheath. Superiorly, the costal margin and portions of the intercostal musculature frame the upper abdomen, while the pectoralis major and deltoid anchor the thoracic inlet and shoulder girdle at the periphery. For teaching the transversus abdominis, an anterior perspective helps clarify a common point of confusion: its fibers do not run vertically like rectus abdominis or inferomedially like external oblique, but act as a circumferential compressor through the thoracolumbar fascia, iliac crest, and inguinal region to tension the abdominal wall.
