Description
Amygdaloid body (amygdala) occupies the anteromedial temporal lobe, positioned deep to the uncus and anterior to the hippocampal formation. From an anterior perspective, the amygdala sits medial to the temporal neocortex and superior to the parahippocampal gyrus, forming a compact ovoid mass at the rostral end of the temporal horn of the lateral ventricle. Its outline reflects the convergence of multiple nuclei, with the basolateral complex located more lateral and the centromedial group more medial, continuous with limbic connections that course toward the basal forebrain. The borders are tight. Spatial orientation matters. Clinically, this region is a frequent target in epilepsy workups because mesial temporal sclerosis and focal temporal lobe seizures can involve the amygdala and adjacent hippocampus, influencing semiology such as ictal fear, autonomic changes, and impaired awareness. Neurosurgical planning for selective amygdalohippocampectomy depends on appreciating the amygdala’s anterior position relative to the hippocampal head and its proximity to the temporal horn and choroidal fissure, where vascular structures constrain safe corridors. The fixed anterior viewpoint supports teaching of laterality and depth, the same orientation used when correlating gross anatomy with coronal and axial MRI slices through the mesial temporal lobe.
