Description
Anterior ankle anatomy is presented with the distal tibia positioned superiorly and medially, the distal fibula and lateral malleolus lying lateral to the tibial plafond, and the trochlea of the talus seated inferiorly within the mortise. Medially, the medial malleolus forms the inner wall of the talocrural (tibiotalar) joint, while the talar neck and anterior talar surface occupy the central, inferior field. Across the anterior joint line, the course of the extensor compartment structures can be appreciated in anatomical position, with tibialis anterior running anteromedially and extensor hallucis longus and extensor digitorum longus crossing more centrally and laterally as they pass toward the dorsum of the foot. A clean joint line. This anterior perspective matters when you are teaching or planning around anterior ankle pain and limited dorsiflexion. Osteophytes at the anterior distal tibia or dorsal talar neck produce classic anterior ankle impingement in athletes and dancers, and their relationship to the tibiotalar joint space is easiest to communicate from the front. It also supports procedural orientation: palpation-guided and ultrasound-guided tibiotalar joint injection typically targets the anteromedial or anterolateral recess adjacent to the tibialis anterior tendon, with awareness of the dorsalis pedis artery and deep fibular (peroneal) nerve in the central anterior interval.
